We’re looking for a motivated and experienced Utility Worker II to join our Power Generation team at the Hydro Generation Operation Facility in Fresh Pond, about 60 miles east of Sacramento and 15 miles east of Placerville. You’ll perform semi-skilled and technical duties mainly focused on hydroelectric equipment and remote facility maintenance. This job covers a range of trades including HVACR, building automation, fire safety systems, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, locksmithing, painting, and civil maintenance.

 

As a Utility Worker II, you’ll work independently and as part of a team to ensure SMUD’s hydroelectric assets and infrastructure run smoothly and efficiently. Your work will help us keep our reputation for safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible energy production. Purpose

A Utility Worker II provides services performing a variety of semi-skilled and technical duties. They may assist skilled technical labor in the performance of their assignments in duties that are of a semi-skilled or technical in nature.

Nature and Scope

Employees in this classification are assigned to perform semi-skilled and technical assignments independently and within a team environment. Work assignments typically require providing services and interaction with SMUD customers and employees throughout SMUD’s service area and facilities. General scope of work is Operations Support, Grounds, Workstations/Space configuration, EE moves, Material Handling/Delivery, Waste & Recycle collection/disposal, Custodial and General Labor.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs event, conference and meeting room configurations/setups. Setups include arranging tables, chairs, signs, displays, stages and modular wall systems to accommodate the various room configurations and meetings.
  • Performs special event setups to include stages, banners, signs, fencing, BBQ’s, tents, tables, chairs, and other miscellaneous items as needed.
  • Performs setup of audio/video and sound amplification equipment for indoor/outdoor events and conference room spaces, as needed. (May require partnership with Audio/Video department)
  • Performs inspections of fire life safety equipment such as; fire extinguishers and emergency eyewash stations.
  • Performs the installation and modification of workstations, including height adjustment of desktops and reconfigurations.
  • Performs the installation and modification of Ergotrons and sit-to-stand ergo workstations.
  • Performs pre-work and post-work associated with computer hardware, such as; unplugging computers, monitors and related equipment, and setting aside for workstation configuration and/or packing and moving computer hardware to a new location and physically reconnecting them.
  • Test computer hardware equipment after pre-work and post-work (See section for proper operation. This function will include test of phone system when connected to computer.
  • Pickup and relocate employee’s materials and supplies for moves including; chairs, boxes, books, tools and equipment.
  • Operates SMUD vehicles, including small, medium and large size trucks that may require special licenses. Utilize trailers to move equipment, materials and equipment safely throughout SMUD.
  • Operate and maintain powered hand tools and equipment used in the performance of their duties.
  • Supports and assist on a team or independently the crafts and other trades with labor for non-technical, semi-skilled work assignments as needed.
  • Logs and documents records as required for compliance.

Required Education

  • High School diploma or equivalent

Required Experience Qualifications

  • Four (4) years or more of relevant work experience of facility operations and work management systems to maintain, install, repair or construct external and internal building components, systems and operations.

Required Licenses/Certificates

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Drivers License and a satisfactory driving record not more than two moving violations in the last two years.

Knowledge Of

Understanding of maintenance procedures; knowledge of SMUD policies and procedures related to administration, functions, services, departments, divisions, personnel, contracting, and procurement, assigning and reviewing work assignments; principles and practices for motivating, and coaching.

Skills To

Work in a service oriented environment on as a team member. Read and interpret written instructions, such as work orders, tailboards and diagrams. Employ soft skills such as creative problem solving and effective oral/written communication. Able to learn and perform semi-skilled to technical assignments independently; work with contractors and vendors.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience in hydroelectric or power generation facilities, supporting equipment and operations. 
  • Comfort working at remote sites with minimal supervision, managing time and priorities. 
  • Skilled in multiple trades like HVACR, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fire systems, painting, and general maintenance. 
  • Strong focus on safety with experience following industry-standard procedures like lockout/tagout and hazard awareness. 
  • Skilled at operating trucks, trailers, powered tools, and equipment to move materials and supplies safely. 
  • Able to work well independently and as part of a team, keeping operations running smoothly.

This role will be an on-site role that will require being in person at one of SMUD's campuses daily to complete work tasks.
