The intent of this posting is to fill one regular full-time position and create an eligibility list that may be used to fill permanent and limited-term vacancies for the next 24 months.
SMUD's Substation Engineering group is posting this opportunity for a Drafting Technician II along with a Senior Designer Drafter position. The department will be filling only one position at either level. If you are interested in also being considered for a Senior Designer Drafter, you will need to apply to that requisition separately.
Purpose
Nature and Scope
This series is comprised of three levels: Level I is the entry level where incumbents acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the tasks associated within the series. The incumbent is progressed/promoted to level II upon demonstrating the required skills and knowledge to independently perform the full scope of the job. The Senior level is comprised of a Subject Matter Expert who is responsible for the most complex assignments. Promotion to the senior level is not through a progression and will happen through SMUD standard civil service hiring process. This is a progressive series and incumbents hired at the entry I level are required to successfully progress to the II level within 60 months of appointment to remain within the job series.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Research items as directed, create and modify technical drawings and specifications as related to project needs.
- Prepare and maintain drawings of SMUD electric system and related electric facilities and maintain associated database; produce plotted drawings/maps, specifications, and materials for presentations.
- Research existing facilities, and future developments; determine and document site elevations; make site plans and profiles for intended construction sites; perform skilled drafting work in preparing original construction drawings involving plans, profiles, cross-sections, elevations, schematics and construction details.
- Perform field verifications and inspections; prepare reports documenting operating conditions and make recommendations as appropriate.
- Supports and assists in developing, writing and implementing programs, procedures and standards.
- Assures that all necessary records and reporting for assigned tasks are maintained.
- Performs a variety of general clerical support functions.
- Performs computer operating system and file management duties.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
Required Education
- High School diploma or equivalent
Required Experience Qualifications
- One (1+) or more years of previous experience in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD).
Required Licenses/Certificates
- Must possess and maintain a valid California Drivers License CDL and a satisfactory driving record not more than two (2) moving violations in the last two (2) years
Knowledge Of

Desirable Qualifications
- Knowledge of Drafting techniques and basic terminology
- 2-3 years’ experience using Microsoft Office products
- Proficient in Excel including pivot table analyses, graphics and related software and databases
- AutoCAD Certified User
