Enterprise Architecture Intern
Join our Enterprise Architecture team as an intern and gain hands-on experience in designing and optimizing technology solutions that drive business value. You'll work alongside architects to analyze current systems, design future-state architectures, and support digital transformation initiatives across the organization.
Activities and responsibilities
- Architecture Analysis & Documentation
- Assist in documenting current-state technology architectures and business processes
- Help create visual architecture diagrams using tools like Visio
- Support the development of technology roadmaps and migration strategies
Research & Innovation
- Conduct market research on emerging technologies and industry best practices
- Analyze potential solutions for business requirements and technical challenges
- Contribute to proof-of-concept projects and technology evaluations
Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities to streamline architecture processes and governance
- Assist with architecture standards development and compliance reviews
- Support the maintenance of enterprise architecture repositories and tools
About SMUD's College Internship Program
SMUD's College Internship Program provides college interns with an opportunity to contribute their skills and knowledge to SMUD while gaining valuable work experience. Workshops and activities will also be part of the program where interns will have the opportunity to be immersed in SMUD's culture and learn leadership skills as well as develop their professional skills.

Purpose
Under staff direction, incumbents in this classification are full-time students in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math program who perform research and analytical tasks for projects and assignments that utilize specific and acquired academic skills and knowledge in alignment with their educational disciplines.
Nature and Scope
The work performed in this classification calls for regular application of analytical and independent research skills. Work is closely related to the employee’s academic major in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs tasks of an analytical or research nature for suitable projects or ongoing assignments which call for specific acquired academic skills and knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math.
- May locate sources of information; collect and organize data.
- Makes computations and analyzes data for degree of confidence and for alternative courses of action.
- May develop computer programs relating to assignments and may code material for established programs.
- May develop written, graphical and/or oral reports.
- May assist staff analysts and technical personnel by performing elements of their work under close supervision.
Required Education
Registration as a full-time student (minimum of 12 units) at an accredited college or university in a declared curriculum with a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) emphasis that will provide the specific skills and knowledge that will contribute to available work assignments.
Desirable Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business Information Systems, or related field
- Rising junior, senior, or graduate student preferred
- Previous internship or project experience in IT or business analysis is a plus
Technical Skills
- Familiarity with enterprise architecture frameworks (TOGAF, or similar)
- Familiarity with system integration concepts
- Experience with diagramming tools (Visio, Draw.io) preferred
- Knowledge of databases, cloud platforms and API concepts
- Understanding of software development lifecycle and project management principles
Soft Skills
- Analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Curiosity about technology trends
