The IT Business Relationship Analyst serves as a critical liaison between the information technology (IT) department and business units within the organization. This role involves understanding business needs, providing insights into technology capabilities, and facilitating the successful resolution of IT business concerns and the delivery of IT services and solutions that enhance business operations and drive value.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders across various business units, facilitating meetings to understand their needs and objectives and help deliver technology solutions.
    • Act as a trusted advisor to business leaders, ensuring alignment between business goals and IT initiatives.
  • Needs Assessment and Requirement Gathering:
    • Conduct interviews, workshops, and surveys to gather detailed business requirements and translate them into functional specifications.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to prioritize requirements based on business impact and urgency.
  • Project Coordination:
    • Assist in coordinating IT projects from demand phase through initiation and hand off to the Project Managers, ensuring timely delivery of solutions that meet business needs.
    • Monitor project readiness progress and communicate status updates to both business units and IT teams.
    • Cordinate with Portfolio Supervisors to produce monthly reports. 
  • Performance Measurement:
    • Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess the effectiveness of IT services and projects.
    • Analyze project outcomes and user feedback to identify areas for improvement and recommend actionable changes.
  • Process Improvement:
    • Identify opportunities for process enhancements and efficiency improvements within IT and business operations through technology solutions.
    • Collaborate with IT and business stakeholders to implement best practices and standardized processes.
  • Training and Support:
    • Provide ongoing support and serve as a point of contact for business units regarding IT-related inquiries and issues.
  • Communication and Reporting:
    • Prepare and deliver reports and presentations to senior management that outline project statuses, business needs, and technology trends.
    • Ensure clear and consistent communication between IT and business units, fostering a culture of collaboration.

Purpose

Assist in providing IT strategic and planning support to all SMUD business units through tactical and strategic planning analysis, ensuring technology and business strategy convergence produces high value.

Nature and Scope

There are two (2) levels in this job classification series that have similar job content but with progressively more challenging degrees and levels of skill, responsibility, knowledge, experience, and qualification requirements:

 

Flex Classifications (that permit progression from lower-level classes to higher level classes without examination based upon assessment of an individual's experience and performance) within the series:

 

  • Entry: Incumbent acquires knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the tasks associated within the series but are not yet demonstrating these at the Journey level.
  • Journey: Incumbent is demonstrating the required skills and knowledge to independently perform the full scope of the job.

 

Entry to Journey: Incumbents at the entry level are required to successfully “progress” to the journey level within 60 months of appointment to remain within the job series.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates in the development of project ideation and business case for new technology project request.
  • Learns to understand the financial aspects of project prioritization.
  • Supports Business Relationship Managers (BRMs) to gather and evaluate data on business needs, trends, and performance metrics to inform decision-making.
  • Schedules and organizes meetings between IT and business stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and follow-up on action items.
  • Facilitates communication of key IT initiatives and changes to business units to promote transparency and understanding.
  • Assists BRMs to build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders to understand their business requirements and technology needs.
  • Works/assists in developing technology roadmap and identifying dependencies.
  • Creates and maintains documentation related to processes, meetings, and stakeholder feedback.
  • Performs other related duties as needed; schedules, hours and locations may fluctuate based on business needs.

Required Education

Bachelor's degree majoring in Computer Science, MIS/BIS, Business, or a related field from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience. If no degree, 5 or more (5+) years of relevant experience is required.

Required Experience

At least one (1+) year experience acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the essential functions listed above.

Knowledge Of

Basic IT concepts; how business works; basic data analysis.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Knowledge of IT Service Management (e.g., ITIL);
  • Time management and organization skills for managing multiple responsibilities;
  • Proven experience in business analysis, IT project coordination, or a similar role within an IT environment;
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into business-friendly language;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work independently and build relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels;
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies and tools.
