  • Qualified candidates from this process may be invited to a performance exam which will be held to determine levels of skill and ability. Performance exam is tentatively scheduled to be held the weekend of April 12th, 2025. 

 

Purpose

Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, repair and inspection of SMUD's transmission and distribution systems. This work can involve operating backhoes, derricks and hole diggers; etc. and perform related duties as assigned.

Nature and Scope

This series is assigned to distribution services. All levels are considered climbing lineman/wn. These classifications encompass work performed by previous SMUD classifications including, but not limited to, Apprentice/Journey Lineman/Wn, Crafts Helpers, Equipment Operator, Line Subforeman.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Apprentice Lineman/Woman and Lineman/Woman: At the Apprentice level, incumbent is in a learning capacity and assists in the duties specified below for a lineman/woman. Lineman/woman will perform these duties as a fully qualified and experienced journey level:
    • Perform complex rigging techniques; cable locating
    • Frames, sets, removes, poles and associated anchors and guys
    • Performs work on lines energized @ 120V through 230 KV; tests on high voltage circuits; environmental clean-up and transports hazardous material
    • Constructs/removes/maintains transmission towers/lines and distribution lines
    • Climbs poles, structures or ladders
    • Installs/removes crossarms and various pole top apparatus; types of cable; streetlight equipment; work site protection devices; residential and commercial meters; various excavations; overhead and underground residential and commercial services
    • Connects transformers
    • Assists electricians in wiring electric substations
    • Assists cable splicers in network underground systems.
    • Operates various types of equipment and vehicles may require class A license; mobile data terminals
    • Installs/repairs cubicle/transformer wells, transformers, capacitors and related line apparatus, sprinkler systems, landscaping
    • Inspects trench, pull box and vault installation; customer service facilities
    • Instructs and directs sub-ordinates

Required Education

  • High School diploma or equivalent

Required Experience Qualifications

  • Must possess the same knowledge, skills, experience, etc. as an Apprentice Lineman/Woman as well as completion of an approved Lineman/Woman Apprentice program including three years climbing experience in overhead electrical distribution work;
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License and satisfactory driving record;
  • Obtain a Class A Driver's License with tanker endorsement after completion of the required driver training class;
  • Reside in a location close enough to their reporting headquarters to allow a reasonable response time from residence under normal driving conditions within posted speed limits;
  • Work overtime and emergencies; Be "On Call" and respond immediately to emergency call-outs; Work special schedules as required.

Knowledge Of

Basic safety rules, standards and procedures, use of hand and power tools; Cal/OSHA laws relative to line construction; State and Federal safety rules and regulations; Hazard identification; Basic math; Line construction methods, techniques and standards (G.O. 95 and 128); Rigging practices/principles/procedures; Material and tool nomenclature; Electrical theory/knowledge relative to line construction/phasing/grounding/line voltage/transformers; circuit labeling; Materials/methods/equipment used in high/low voltage line construction/maintenance and repair; Mobile data terminals; residential meters, street and dusk to dawn lights and their application.

Skills To

Read and understand job and training manuals, safety procedures and their application on and around high voltage conductors and equipment; Read, interpret and follow written and oral instructions; Climb poles/structures/ladders; Maintain a positive work relationship/environment with peers and public; Perform physically demanding work for extended time periods; Work safely at heights; Operate motor vehicles, SMUD radios and mobile data terminals.

On-site Work

This role will be an on-site role that will require being in person at one of SMUD's campuses daily to complete work tasks.
