This is a journey-level Carpentry position. Maintenance Carpenters perform a wide variety of work associated with SMUD buildings and facilities.
Purpose
Under general supervision, performs a wide range of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and fabrication work associated with SMUD’s buildings and auxiliary facilities including those requiring specialized skills in woodworking and cabinet making.
Nature and Scope
This is a journey-level job classification for which there is an apprenticeship. Incumbents in this classification perform rough and finished woodworking and cabinet making associated with SMUD buildings/facilities. This classification is distinguished from the work described for the Building Maintenance Mechanic classification that is involved with the electro-mechanical features of facilities. These two classes may have considerable overlap on work not calling for specialized carpentry skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Builds, repairs, remodels, paints, installs, and refinishes cabinets, bookcases, furniture, counters, and paneling.
- Builds countertops and items such as toolboxes, crates for shipping and storing of materials, and splicing boxes from rough draft drawings.
- Makes minor repairs to customer property, roofs, cyclone fences, wooden fences, doors, and windows.
- Repairs and paints the interior/exterior of buildings, power plants, warehouses, garages, transformers, and other SMUD structures/equipment.
- Performs Civil maintenance work such as concrete forms, sidewalk repair, pedestal pads, and structural concrete.
- Builds displays for exhibits and training programs from various materials.
- Repairs and installs drywall, suspended ceilings, acoustic ceiling tile, tile flooring, and carpet.
- Performs construction carpenter work such as build out of walls, door frames, windows, and structural modifications.
- Operates power hand and stationary tools associated with carpentry trade such as sanders, paint sprayers, and saws.
- Operates SMUD vehicles and equipment.
Required Education
Completion of an approved apprenticeship program in carpentry,

Completion of an accredited trade program in carpentry and at least two (2+) years of journey-level carpentry experience,
OR
At least five (5+) years of journey-level carpentry experience.

Required Licenses/Certificates
Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record (not more than two moving violations in the last two years).
Knowledge Of
- Carpentry fundamentals.
- Methods, materials, and tools required to make repairs and installations to buildings and structures involving carpentry, cabinet making, cabinet refinishing, concrete form and placement, fencing, internal/external wall repair, finishing, and painting.
- Proper methods and procedures in applying paints, coatings, and finishes to all types of substrate materials.
- Types of fasteners and their uses.
- Methods and types of construction including concrete, wall, ceiling, flooring, cabinetry, fencing, and roofing.
- Safety practices and fundamentals as they apply to working in a ship and working in the field.
Skills To
- Use power hand and stationary tools.
- Use hand tools.
- Use water and oil-based paints, stains, varnishes, and different types of contact cement.
- Install and repair fences and roofs.
- Make and repair cabinets, furniture, and boxes.
- Install and repair concrete, both aesthetic and structural.

- Install and repair types of wall coverings including sheetrock, plaster, and stucco.
- Install and repair ceilings of various construction including sheetrock, acoustical, and architectural.
- Install and repair flooring of various types found in light commercial to industrial application including epoxy flooring, carpet, tile, stone, artificial solid surface, wood, and laminate.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
- Lift heavy objects and perform strenuous physical work inside and outside.
- Work without direct supervision.
- Prepare rough sketches and estimate the amount of material to be used.
- Recognize lumber types, grades, and uses.
- Construct items from rough drawings, blueprints, and sketches with limited instructions.
- Work effectively with others.
- Work alone and in remote areas.
- Work in a safe manner and wear appropriate safety equipment.
- Be certified to operate lift platforms, forklifts, and other similar equipment.

Desirable Qualifications
Prior job experience in carpentry relating to both construction and maintenance of light commercial and industrial facilities.
