Purpose
A Network Assistant is a non-Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) who supports Network Cable Splicer crews. This work includes performing non-QEW duties under the direction of Network Cable Splicer Foreman/woman or Journeyman/woman as part of a Network Cable Splicing crew; maintaining a valid Class A license; safely operating vehicles and equipment associated with daily maintenance and construction; and performing Confined Space Safety Attendant duties.
Nature and Scope
Employees in this classification will become proficient in the safe operation of specialized trucks, tools, and equipment utilized by Network crews; associated SMUD safety policies, Safety Risk Assessments (SRA), and procedures; traffic control; and the use of maps, plans, prints, and electronic devices for identifying and locating SMUD infrastructure.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supports Network crew's daily duties as a non-QEW.
- Performs Confined Space Safety Attendant duties; calibrates and maintains safety monitoring and rescue equipment; maintains logs and documents with associated equipment.
- Assists Network crew performing work within confined spaces; work limited to solely non-energized equipment outside of the minimum approach distance.
- Drives Class A vehicles.
- Maintains inventory of parts, tools, and equipment necessary for daily scheduled Network maintenance and construction.
- Uses hand/power tools and test equipment.
- Operates equipment such as boom and bucket trucks, aerial equipment, pullers, and forklifts.
- Reads and interprets written documentation such as policies, procedures, SRAs, maps, mechanical and electrical drawings and schematics, and equipment technical manuals.
- Understands and comprehends instructions and communicates information.
- Controls traffic.
- Assists Network crew with Underground Service Alerts.
- Develops and maintains effective working relationships with all groups of individuals.
- Safely lifts and carries up to 50 pounds and moves heavy compressed gas cylinders.
- Sets and climbs ladders and assists in the performance of work from a ladder or manlift while wearing fall protection.
- Performs other related non-QEW duties as required.
Required Education
- High School diploma or equivalent

- None.
Required Licenses/Certificates
- Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record (not more than two moving violations in the last two years) and obtain a Class A license within 9 months after hire date.
Knowledge Of
Basic mathematics including multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, decimals, fractions, and concepts of distance and measurements; basic computer and keyboarding techniques; appropriate use of English.
Skills To
Obtain and maintain a Class A license and safely operate associated vehicles; read, interpret, and operate computers, tablets, and related electronic devices; read and interpret SMUD standards, maps, prints, SRAs and procedures; work in a safe and effective manner; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; work safely and communicate effectively in a crew environment while assisting others; deal tactfully with contractors and the general public.
Desirable Qualifications
No prior electric trade experience is preferred.

On-site Work
This role will be an on-site role that will require being in person at one of SMUD's campuses daily to complete work tasks.
