Purpose

To provide lead direction to and work coordination for a crew comprised of journey level Electrical Technicians and at times other craftsmen of different disciplines involved in the installation, testing and maintenance of relays and protective systems associated with the generation, distribution and transmission systems ranging from 4kv to 230 kV. This would include the installation of new equipment using an approved DCN package and coordinating with SMUD Engineers or Project Managers.

Nature and Scope

Incumbents assigned to this class are expected to function primarily as working leads providing direction to an assigned crew engaged in Electrical Technician work. Incumbents are also required to actively perform the work of a journey Electrical Technician on crew assignments. This job class is more heavily focused on the completion of work tasks requiring close work coordination with SMUD Engineers and Project Managers as well as those that cross multi-craft disciplines to include work required by DCN packages whereas the primary focus of the Electrical Technician Subforeman/wn. and Electrical Technician Light Foreman jobs are to provide lead supervisory responsibility for crew direction and work safety oversight. This job class will also provide an upgrade rate for Electrical Technicians while designated as being in-charge of a crew performing Electrical Technician work including the implementation of upgrades to SMUD Assets.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directs a crew involved in the installation, testing and maintenance of relays and protective systems associated with the generation, distribution and transmission systems ranging from 4 to 230 kV.
  • Performs and directs the skilled testing and maintenance work on protective and supervisory control systems associated with SMUDs generating, transforming and transmitting facilities.
  • Performs and directs the installation, field testing, adjustment, servicing and preventive maintenance of protective relay equipment and relay carriers, supervisory equipment, remote and local control devices, and associated wiring and station apparatus. This includes the installation of new equipment requiring a DCN package and coordination with Engineers and Craftsmen from other disciplines.
  • Receives, reviews and executes clearances in accordance with SMUD’s Safe Clearance Procedures.
  • Reviews schematics for system and subsystem effectiveness.
  • Integrates work with and may perform work on associated communications and instrumentation systems.
  • Inspects completed work for adherence to established SMUD standards and specifications.
  • Performs related Electrical Technician work as required.

Required Experience Qualifications

Minimum of two (2) years experience as a journey Electrical Technician; progressively responsible experience testing, installing, and maintaining electrical protective relay systems used for protecting and controlling electrical utility generation, transmission, and, distribution systems.

Knowledge Of

Methods for assigning and directing the work of others in a lead capacity; SMUD time reporting procedures and requirements; SMUD work standards and safety practices as related to Electrical Technician work.

Skills To

Apply principles of lead supervision to a crew involved in field work; schedule and coordinate the work of assigned crew effectively; communicate effectively in verbal and written forms; maintain accurate work logs and prepare necessary reports and documents related to daily work assignments; and, establish work priorities effectively.

Desirable Qualifications

Proven ability to direct others as shown by passed experience in this role.

This role will be an on-site role that will require being in person at one of SMUD's campuses daily to complete work tasks.
