Note: This is a year-round internship opportunity, not a Summer internship. The department is looking for an intern that can start in the next 4-6 weeks.

 

About the Treasury Department 
The Treasury Department ensures that funds are available to finance capital improvements and operations for SMUD. The enterprise risk management function helps to inform decision making processes across the organization. Under the purview of SMUD's Chief Financial Offer, the Enterprise Risk Management Office (ERMO) coordinates the management of SMUD's portfolio of risk. ERMO helps to maintain an early warning system to monitor changes in, and the emergence of risks that affects the organization's business objectives. 
 

About the Treasury & Risk Management Intern Position 
 

As a Treasury and Risk Management Intern, you will gain exposure to how ERM provides risk support across SMUD including the responsibilities of various business functions and how they work together.

 

As an intern, you will develop an understanding of the utility and apply principles you learn through hands-on projects. You will gain experience and knowledge in the following areas: 

  • An understanding of how SMUD considers risk in its strategic planning and decision making process
  • How the ERMO helps business areas identify, assess, consider mitigations and report on risks
  • How ERMO collaborates across various business functions to ensure risks are managed appropriately
  • Critical thinking skills, project management experience, and experience working in a business setting

SMUD's College Internship Program provides college interns with an opportunity to contribute their skills and knowledge to SMUD while gaining valuable work experience. Workshops and activities will also be part of the program where interns will have the opportunity to be immersed in SMUD's culture and learn leadership skills as well as develop their professional skills.

Purpose

Under staff direction, incumbents in this classification are full-time students who perform research and analytical tasks for projects and assignments that utilize specific and acquired academic skills and knowledge in non-engineering subjects and disciplines.

Nature and Scope

The work performed in this classification calls for regular application of analytical and independent research skills. This work is distinguished from students engaged in repetitive and easily learned tasks who are employed in the Office Assistant (clerical/technical) classification. Incumbents in the Engineering Student Assistant classification perform at a similar level but are restricted to students majoring in an Engineering curriculum and performing tasks that employ acquired mathematical and science knowledge.

Duties and Responsibilities

Work may include, but is not limited to, the following: (NOTE: While in general all the functions and requirements listed are essential, individual positions and/or locations may not require all duties be performed.)

  • Update risk profiles in SharePoint and Power BI.
  • Performs tasks of an analytical or research nature for suitable projects or ongoing assignments which call for specific acquired academic skills and knowledge.
  • May locate sources of information; collects and organizes data.
  • Makes computations and analyzes data for degree of confidence and for alternative courses of action.
  • May develop computer programs relating to assignments and may code material for established programs.
  • May develop written, graphic and/or oral reports.
  • May assist staff analysts and technical personnel by performing elements of their work under close supervision.
  • Work across business areas to collaborate on projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Registration as a full-time student (minimum of 12 units) at a resident academic institution in a declared curriculum that will provide the specific skills and knowledge that will contribute to available work assignments.

Required Education

High School Diploma

Desirable Qualifications

  • Majoring in Finance, Data Science, Business, Communications, or similar majors
  • Ability to pick up new material quickly and think on your feet
  • Exceptional problem solving and analytical skills
  • Proven leadership capability including strong interpersonal, relationship and collaboration skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, while meeting deadlines
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office Suite (Advanced Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, PowerBI etc.)
  • Programming experience
  • Effective written communication, report writing
  • Understanding of business finance
  • Knowledge of project management
  • Ability to perform research on scientific data

Students must be able to commute to the SMUD Offices in Sacramento, CA when/if requested to come in.

 

To have a student position at SMUD, you must not have any relatives working at SMUD.

 

Students must be enrolled as a full-time (at least 12 undergraduate units OR 8 graduate units) during the current Fall Semester/Quarter of 2023.

 

Students must have received at least a 2.0 GPA in the previous quarter/semester.

 

Students can work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session, up to 130 hours per month during school breaks, and up to 960 hours per year. A year is defined as July 1st to June 30th.

 

Currently, SMUD is not hiring candidates for its student internship positions who require sponsorship from an employer either now or in the future. Such sponsorship is not needed for citizens, a U.S. National, a permanent resident, or one granted refuge or asylum status by the U.S. government. Visa holders typically require sponsorship in one form or another at some point in time.
