This posting will be used to create an eligibility list of qualified candidates to fill current and future limited term and full time Vehicle Attendants over the next two (2) years. Please be advised, our immediate need is to fill a night shift vacancy. This role typically has a schedule of 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM and is eligible for a pay premium associated with night shift work.
You must clearly demonstrate, on your resume, that you possess the knowledge, skills and experience required in the minimum qualifications listed in this posting. The most qualified candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to the written examination.
Please note that successful candidates will be required to obtain a Class A license with hazmat endorsement within six months of hire.

Written Exam Details:
- The examination is tentatively scheduled to be held the week of June 16th, 2025.
- Exams are strictly PASS/FAIL, results will be sent to each applicant approximately two weeks from the exam date.

Purpose
Under general direction, performs a broad variety of preventive maintenance work in the servicing and limited mechanical repair of SMUD fleet units including automobiles, light and heavy trucks (including 4-wheel drive), cranes, forklifts, aerial lifts, trailers, heavy construction equipment, and electric vehicles, both in the garage and in the field as necessary.
Nature and Scope
The work of a Vehicle Attendant is distinguished from that of a Vehicle Mechanic in that a Vehicle Attendant makes only limited mechanical repairs. (A Vehicle Attendant’s duties are comparable to those of a mechanic’s helper or service specialist in a large trucking fleet). While the work in this classification involves many routine tasks, an incumbent must be capable of assuming the more specialized duties of this class.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Diagnoses and corrects tire problems (including equipment, light and heavy special truck tires) using a tire machine and related mounting and patching tools
- Balances wheels using a dynamic balancing machine
- Performs minor tune-ups and cooling system service associated with preventive maintenance service including replacing ignition components and coolant hoses. Preventative maintenance on gas, diesel and electric vehicles/equipment. Including, but not limited to replacing fuel filters, cabin filters and Hybrid battery filters. Operates fluid exchangers and transmissions/cooling systems
- Safely operate all Field Services trucks and tools
- Changes oil and filters; lubricates automotive and special construction cranes and equipment (including transmission flushing machine)
- Packs wheel bearings including units equipped with disc brakes and four-wheel drive
- Tests charging systems and changes batteries
- Performs road tests and safety inspections during servicing and replaces antifreeze, wiper blades, lamps, and tires, as required
- Uses vendor manuals and/or online resources for correcting minor problems
- Makes parts pick-ups at vendor’s stores; prepares new vehicles for issue
- Operates the wrecker truck and winch equipment to recover and tow disabled or stuck vehicles
- Fuels all fleet vehicles daily and adds makeup oil daily
- Makes parts pick-ups at vendor’s stores and assists the Vehicle Parts Clerk as required
- Decommissions retired vehicles –remove all SMUD installed equipment
- Refuel SMUD vehicles from mobile fuel truck
- Complete required vehicle/equipment inspections and document findings
- Performs related duties as assigned
Required Experience Qualifications
- Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience during the last five (5) years performing duties similar to those described above.
Knowledge Of
Nomenclature, methods, and tools used in the repair and servicing of a variety of automotive, truck cranes, and other heavy-duty equipment; general principles of fleet operations; basic computer skills and safe working procedures.
Skills To
Work independently while effectively service, maintain, and perform minor repair work on a variety of fleet equipment; read and interpret shop and service manuals to apply repair procedures; understand written directions and records; write basic reports and correctly fill out forms and keep other basic records as required; do mechanical work; operate tools and equipment used in the performance of the work; provide excellent customer service and work in a safe manner.
Required Licenses/Certificates
- Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record not more than two moving violations in the last two years.
- A Class A Driver's license may be required and in addition, the position may require a hazardous materials and tanker endorsements within six 6 months of hire. Candidates appointed to positions requiring the possession/retention of a Class A Drivers license must undergo an initial drug and alcohol screen and submit to random drug and alcohol screens as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation DOT.
Desirable Qualifications
- Mechanic experience in a dealership garage or truck fleet operation
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or ASE Master certifications
